SSTAP Overview

Comprehensive In-Class Course Foundation

Trainees will learn all aspects of Script Supervising, giving them a solid foundation to take into the on-set experience. The in-class work encompasses lectures, practical applications and interactive group experiences. Students are required to attend regularly scheduled classes 3-5 times a week, 6-hour days, exclusive of breaks, for a total of 30 days, as well as special seminars.

Upon successful completion of the in-class training, students will be evaluated to determine if they are ready to advance to the on-set component.

Coursework will take place in the Los Angeles area. Trainees will need to obtain their own housing and transportation.

Intensive On-Set Training

Trainees who have successfully completed the in-class component advance to a 60-day, on-set, paid apprenticeship (based on production availability). Students will be paired with a mentor who best matches their skills and needs.

This on-set training is unique to SSTAP. It gives Trainees an opportunity to both observe and put their skills to work under the mentorship of experienced Script Supervisors on union film, television, and commercial productions.

A sample of apprenticeship duties included in pre-production are typing up breakdowns and keeping track of script revisions. Some duties during production would be taking continuity photos, checking camera reports, and watching for specific continuity elements while shooting.

Seminars And Discussions

Throughout the program there will be professional seminars designed to increase the Trainee’s knowledge of the Industry. These interactive panel discussions will be conducted by Cinematographers, Editors, Directors, VFX Supervisors, and various craftspeople from other unions.

There will also be Q&A sessions moderated by experienced Script Supervisors, where Trainees will learn about joining Local 871, creating a resume, finding work, and negotiating skills.
