IATSE Local 871 Script Supervisors Training & Apprenticeship Program

Our mission is to both preserve and advance the craft of Script Supervision by providing a constant flow of diverse and highly trained individuals.

What is a Script Supervisor?

A Script Supervisor’s role in film, television, and commercial productions is essential and multi-faceted. As Filmmakers, we are the Director’s right hand, assisting them in all aspects of storytelling.

We also work closely with the cast and crew to establish and maintain the visual, emotional, and physical continuity of the project. A Script Supervisor’s detailed notes are the link between the Director and the Editor.

What Does it Take to be a Script Supervisor?

An accomplished Script Supervisor should be detail-oriented, organized, and focused. Being adept at prioritizing and multi-tasking is essential, as well as having the ability to collaborate.

A Script Supervisor must possess strong communication skills, a flexible and diplomatic personality, and be able to remain calm in stressful situations. One must also have excellent reading, writing, and basic mathematical abilities.

Working as a Script Supervisor can also be physically demanding. Prepare to be on set for long hours with little rest time, sometimes under extreme weather conditions.

The Script Supervisors
Training & Apprenticeship Program

The Local 871 Script Supervisors Training and Apprenticeship Program is designed to provide a solid foundation and clear understanding of Script Supervision.

It is a comprehensive 90-day program based in Los Angeles. The curriculum is comprised of 30 days of in-person class instruction and 60 days of an on-set apprenticeship; a feature unique to SSTAP.

The in-class component will be taught by veteran Script Supervisors. The on-set apprenticeship will occur on union features, commercials, and television series under the mentorship of experienced Script Supervisors. Students will leave the program prepared to work on their own productions.
